Two years ago, at the age of 59, I had become completely dissatisfied with being the “pudgy” old grandpa and decided I would have to get off my butt and get physically fit if I wanted any quality of life. My first thought was to go to Gold’s Gym. I took out a membership, even though it was intimidating because, let’s face it, Gold’s is not the place people like me go to look great. However, the one great stroke of luck was my being introduced to Paul Hedrick. I enlisted his services as a Personal Trainer for a twelve session program just to get started and have been his client since. His knowledge of physiology, nutrition and training techniques and helped me to far exceed any fitness goals I may have had when I first started. His “big picture” vision of training enabled me to push my limits of strength and confidence beyond what I thought achievable. It is so gratifying when someone I haven’t seen in some time comments on the transformation in my physique. I would never have accomplished this by myself. I can’t say that I will always train with a Personal Trainer but I am sure if I do, it will be with Paul Hedrick.

What I like about Paul as a trainer:
· He is no nonsense. You come in to train with him and that is exactly what you do. He uses every minute of the training session working with you.
· He customizes training just for your needs. It is obvious that he has a plan for you as you work through the session. I have been to other trainers who do the same exercises with every client that they have. I know this because I watch them train clients after me!
· He watches you throughout the session and knows that some days are better than others for doing exercises. He modifies the session if necessary.
· He makes sure that you are performing the exercises correctly and gently makes adjustments so that you get the maximum out of the exercise.
· He is extremely knowledgeable and constantly reading about the most effective techniques.
What I can do now that I couldn’t before:
· I can walk down stairs one step at a time without fear of falling or feeling like I need to hold on to the railing. I can easily carry grocery bags up stairs.
· I have better stability.
· I am stronger in my core and can easily lift my suitcases when traveling.
· I have more overall strength.
· My body is more compact. I am wearing smaller size pants and shirts.
PS: I am a 63 year old woman and I do have to puff up my chest at times when I see myself doing some exercises successfully that I see a much younger woman doing!

Van Jordan -
Working with Paul over the past year far exceeded my expectations. Initially, I met Paul after a long period of inactivity due to a knee surgery that left me insecure about working out. I was injured doing a two-mile run on a cinder track; this was supposed to be a warm up for sprint intervals, which I had been performing for a year without event. By the time I signed up for training at WS, I was out of shape, 20 pounds heavier than I had ever been; beyond this, at 43, I didn’t expect to gain any new vigor over the next few months of convalescing from my injury. My expectations, indeed, were low.
Paul’s approach to the training alleviated my insecurity about getting in shape. For one thing, I came to realize that training is a process that takes place over a trajectory of phases: First, I gained strength and endurance. I realized I could workout with more intensity over time, which was not the case when we first started. Secondly, I started losing body fat and gaining muscle mass. My body fat was 20% when I first came to WS; it’s now at 17%. And I’ve gained 10 pounds of muscle over the year. Finally, I was able to increase the variety and amount of weight through my exercise circuit.
Our workouts are never repeated in a sequence. That is to say, I never came to the gym for training and felt like Paul hadn’t thought out a routine for that particular day; the variety of exercises was startling. (The Hedrick Press became my favorite tricep blast!) We did flexor and extensor muscles in supersets; full-body, powerlifting movements like cleans, deadlifts and jerks; and we did isolation movements to target specific body parts. My definition increased as well as my strength.
This was not simply a regiment for getting in shape, but it has also become a lifestyle that I’ve been trained to live. As a college professor, I spend most of my time behind a desk, hunched over papers or peering into a computer screen. There’s nothing in my daily activities that would dictate my staying in shape; that is, nothing other than my new commitment and new knowledge gained through my training with Paul.

Put on 6 lbs of lean muscle and lost 2 lbs of fat!!
Plus put 100 lbs on his deadlift!!!
Lifting weights at the gym, running around Lady Bird Lake and riding my bike on weekends has never really gotten me anywhere. My weight has been consistent for the past four or five years. My fitness never improved or declined.
Since joining Paul’s Weight Training class at Workshop Fitness, I've never felt better. I'm performing in every aspect of an active life. My confidence is growing and I know that I'm on track to meeting and beating my fitness goals.

When I started training with Paul Hedrick several years ago, I had a tweaked rotator cuff injury in one shoulder and lack of movement in the other. I also had constant lower back pain.
Paul has worked with me for two years and now I have almost total movement in both arms. The back pain is gone.
He has strengthened my core and my shoulders. I have greater flexibility and movement than I have had for years. When I first started I couldn’t lift my arms over my head and now I can easily lift them all the way.
Paul is a personal trainer however he has been more of a physical therapist for me. He is extremely knowledgeable and conscientious in what he does. I would recommend him highly.

Footage David Lemons at his first Powerlifting Meet. He completed 7 out of 9 lifts and finished 1st in the Masters 40-44 division. He also was able to deadlift a personal best of 402 after 8 grueling max attempts! Very proud! Stellar performance Lemons!! Since the competition he has already double his previous squat and deadlift maxes in training.
