Relax your upper back, say what!? What you talking bout? My deadlift was stalled a year and half ago at around 475-485LBs. When my deadlift was around 405 or so, as long as I broke the weight off the ground I would lock it. No problem. Once I reached 465, things changed I started missing right at my knee caps. Finally after much research, failed attempts, and practice I started piecing together what I was doing wrong.
1. I was trying to keep my upper back tight, which was lengthening the path the bar had to travel. I started just hanging my arms like hooks almost, lengthening my lats. Which in return creates a shorter bar path and ultimately better leverage.
2. Turning the deadlift into a squat with a bar in your legs. I was setting my hips too low at the beginning of the pull. This was taking away any leverage I had, losing the crane type effect.
Problem fixed..Boom PRs!!
